All the animals heeded the advice of their king except Tortoise. The tortoise was a very lazy animal and he did not work like the others. The tortoise would spend all day eating, singing praises of himself, sluggishly taking a walk at evenings, and having a long night of sleep. One day, his friend Deer came to him and said, “Tortoise, remember our king's advice. He advised us to work hard by planting our seeds now, and nurturing them to grow so that we will reap bountifully when it is time for harvest. Why are you sleeping all day and not working?” Tortoise laughed and answered, “my dear friend, the best thing to do now is to sleep, eat and sing praises of myself. What if those who are working hard die before harvest? Would they be able to enjoy the rewards of their labour? I can't get myself killed yet because I still have many more years to enjoy.” “But Tortoise,” answered Deer, “If you keep sleeping lazily, you will not have anything when it is harvest time. You will be hungry and no one will help you.” Tortoise laughed again, and replied, “I have enough food here that will sustain me for long. If the food is no longer enough, I am sure you will help me with some food that I can eat.” Deer responded, “I won't help you if you run out of food because I have warned and advised you to work hard now.” Tortoise nodded mischievously, and thought to himself, “I am very wise and can never be hungry.” During harvest, all the animals gathered all their crops and agreed to have a celebration in the air. By that time, Tortoise had already run out of food and he didn't have anywhere to get food from. So Tortoise thought to himself, “I will go to this party and use my wisdom to eat and be full.” On the day of the party. All the animals were gathered, there were singing and dancing, there were smiles all over people's faces and everyone was getting ready to enjoy food and drinks to their satisfaction. Tortoise sat quietly and was thinking of what to do to get food because he was sure the animals will not give him food. When the food was served to all the animals on the table, Horse, who served the food said the food was for “All of You.” The animals looked startled, because they were wondering who “All of You” was. Immediately, Tortoise said, “My other name is All of you, so the food is for me.” All the animals then agreed and let him eat it all. Tortoise ate it all and was happy that he had deceived them. When Horse came back, He explained that the food was to be shared by all the animals. Then all the animals were angry because Tortoise had tricked them. They threw him down from the sky and Tortoise landed with his shell which caused it to crack to this day. Moral : Don't be lazy. Laziness breeds mischief and the end of mischief is lasting pain and suffering.
